How long do stitches take to dissolve?

Our cat had laser surgery 2 weeks ago on the underside of his tongue. How long do the stitches take to dissolve? He's constantly pawing at the affected area.

There are two kinds of stitches, those that dissolve and those that have to be removed. The kind that dissolve should be gone after two weeks. It's probably a good idea to check with the vet who put the stitches in.

Believe it or not I asked my vet to take a look at the area and he replied "he doesn't want to agitate our cat by subjecting him to an exam just yet." He agreed to more pain med.
   
I go to the top vet clinic in North Texas-Dallas area, now I'm not so sure.
