pooping in the crate

We have a rescue mixed border collie approx 2 yrs old. We have had her 3 weeks and put her in her crate when we leave the house. She howls when we leave but now she has deficated twice in her cage, after she has been taken for a walk. Very excited when she gets out. Believe she was a stray for sometime. Suggestions ?
