I have had my dog for about 3yrs now and in the three years we have had our ups and downs with him. Last year on my birthday in june my husband bought me a new puppy, our other dog loved her they played all the time in the same time I found out that I was pregnant. On july 4 of this year my new puppy was hit by a car, and I had just had my son. But now our older dog has just lost his mind. He chews everything outside even a metal shed. He chews till he is bleeding, you can leave him in the house for along time and he just lays around and does not mess with anything, but you put him outside and he crys and barks at the back door. what can I do? I dont want to give him away cause he will do the samething and iam afraid someone will put him down or let him run away. Please Help ME!!!!

Your dog is missing the puppy, he's lonesome. He's also grieving. You have your baby, but he doesn't have his. He's afraid to be alone in the yard, since he's lost his little friend. He mopes around the house & doesn't fuss because he's at least with the family - but he's still depressed & upset. The chewing outside is a panic reaction to the situation. He needs distraction, as you're much more busy than you were before, because of the the baby.

He can be brought back into normality, it'll just take a little work.

I think the best thing for everyone would be to adopt another young dog. You've already had 2 dogs, so having 2 dogs again won't really change anything.

This will give your dog another dog to play with. He won't be lonesome for a little friend anymore (after all, the baby is still to young to play with) & he won't be alone in the yard, either. The cost of adoption will be far less than the vet bills to treat your dog's bleeding mouth.

I suggest you go to Petfinder.com & find your local dog adoption group. I recommend the adoption group because they can find a dog that will suit your needs; they usually know more about their dogs than the animal shelters do. Bring the dog with you to the next local adoption group, & explain the situation & what you need.

Choose a friendly, outgoing, normal young female dog with no complexes (you don't have the time), about 8 months to a year old or so. At that age, they can take care of themselves (mostly), their personalities are established, but they're still kids. Your dog can help pick the new dog out.

In between now & then, I think you should let him stay in the house as much as he likes, & take him for walks so he can go potty. The panic attacks he's having will probably only get worse, until you can make him feel happier. You can take him & the baby for regular walks, it'll be good for the dog & the baby to get used to each other.

I forgot to say that we did get a new puppy and he seemed to be better for a few days, but now he has started it again.
