We have a rescue "Breeders dog" 4 1/2 yrs. She is a sweetheart, but does not seem to know how to play. We have given her toys and try to spark an interest but to no avail. The only thing that excites her is food and treats. We tried the "kong" toy with food insert. She was interested for about one minute and then left it. any suggestions??

Rescued dogs frequently have no idea what to do with toys. It took my dog months before he started tentatively squeaking his fuzzy carrot. He only recently started playing with a ball - but all he did was chew it apart. He won't chase sticks, either.

Get a fuzzy toy that squeaks, a tennis ball, a chew bone, a tug-of-war toy & a Skinneez toy (no stuffing) (link) & leave them lying around. Toss them in his direction periodically, & roll the ball past his nose. Put a couple in his bed. He just has to get used to the concept that a) toys are to play with & b) these toys are his.

He'll figure it out eventually. It's just that "playing" and "toys" are a foreign concept to him.

Take him to the local dog park; maybe he'll get the idea from some of the other dogs.
