Hi My Name is diana, I am thinking of getting a new puppy for husband and I.

I just got a few concerns. I am tossing up between 3 puppies but don't know what I want?

I am after these few points in a dog:

1. Which ones are a low Maintenance Dog?

2. Which does not shed/malt at a lot?

3. Good as Guard Dogs?

4. Which are a good medium size dogs?

IF you can help that would be great, so I don't pick the wrong puppy.

Thanks

Short-haired dogs are less maintenance than long-haired dogs.

There's only a few dogs that don't shed (poodles being the most popular).

Guard Dogs are always large, 60 lbs or more. Guard dogs need to be trained, & it's not always successful. Perhaps you'd be happier with an Alert Dog. Alert Dogs tend to be smaller, bark at all strange things, & give you good warning of odd events happening. (Some are quite brave - Corgis have been known to attack intruders far larger than they are, and since they were too small, they have been known to be killed in defense of their homes.)

There are numerous wonderful medium-sized dogs out there, too many to list here.

Any of the Terrier class, & dogs like Airedales, Boxers, Beagles, & Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are wonderful dogs (this list covers a range of sizes) (See the link to a good breed site, they're also broken down by size.)

Remember that some breeds are not suitable for certain people (Dalmations & greyhounds need people around all the time).

Go to the library & take out several books on dog breeds in general, & books on breeds in specific size classes & types of dogs (terriers, retrievers, hounds...etc.)

Why don't you go to an adoption event at your local pet store & see if you fall in love with somebody?

Me, personally, I like mutts. They're almost always healthy & smart. And there's a million kinds out there.
