I have a pregnant mare that I have now had for a year. I got her last year on November 20 and the man I got her from had her for about 2 weeks. She was bred somewhere within the two weeks he had her. She has been pregnant for 378 days. I can feel the foal moving around and she has milk but is this normal? I have heard that you should not give a pregnant mare fescue hay the whole time she is pregnant and I have heard to not give it to her for 30 days before her due date. I am not certain but I think that is what she has been eating throughout her whole pregnancy. I am undecided about calling the vet and I just would like to know is this normal and what will happen is she has been eating fescue hay?

Well she hasn't had it yet but I did call the vet and she told me that is is not totally odd for the foal to be a little over a month late. But she also said that sometimes the bag will not drop and the mare will not have the proper amount of milk, but as far as I can see and squeeze out, shes got plenty! The vet said to call her the day the foal is born so that she can come check it out and it may be weak due to teh amount of fescue hay. Thanks for your comment and I will keep you posted!
