What do you think about pet insurance? A very low percentage of pets in America are insured and I'm wondering why this might be... are people unaware of its existence? Do they not want to pay for it?
My sister pays around $30 a month which seems pretty reasonable... what do you think?

I've had my Golden Ret insured with VPI since he was about 3 years old. He's now over 11, and the insurance has paid for itself a number of times. My newest member, who arrived in December when he was 6 wks old, is also insured. I'm using Traupanion, which has a better payout and lower deductible but will not insure dogs who are over ten, unless they were put on a policy prior to that age.
Personally, I think pet insurance is a great idea. You never know when you're going to be nailed with a huge vet bill due to accident or illness. Most people cannot afford to shell out hundreds or even thousands of dollars in medical bills for themselves, much less their pets. As a result, they end up putting their beloved pet to sleep or handing him/her over to a rescue group as a result. Either way, they've lost a companion, their best friend, and a family member. My fur kids are worth the insurance prices I pay for them every month, even if I have to do without something else that I want or even need.

Actually, I have found that you can enroll a pet with Trupanion up to age 14. They have gotten great reviews and I'm planning on enrolling my dog as soon as I adopt her.
