Hi! My wife and I just moved to san francisco with our small dog (whippit/ boston terrior mix) to a slightly smaller apartment. She has been used to us leaving her at home during the day her entire life (she is seven). After being here for a month and a half, she has started to misbehave during the day (essential problem is scratching and trying to chew through the door, tearing up trash- happened three times now).
We really just need some help here! She is destroying our awesome new apartment. We don't know what to do to punish her. She knows she has misbehaved when we get home (cowering and hiding). It is really strange because she has been so well behaved for the last five years. We are walking her at least 3 times a day; we take her to the park at least 3 times a week. Please help!

By doing what she is doing she is releasing the stress of being left alone in an unfamiliar place. Think of it from her point of view. You are her mommy and daddy her protectors. She trusts you. If you were suddenly picked up and moved from a place you spent most of you life to a new scary smaller place and left there alone you would be stressed too. I would say put her in a room with not that much stuff she can destroy in it. Have a doggy bed and water in it also some piddle pads would be good too. Get some toys for her I have found the red hollow cones works really well. What you can do to keep her busy is take some peanut butter and mix in dog kibble. Put it in the red hollow cone and freeze it over night. The next day before you leave put it in the room with her and shut the door. She will go crazy chewing on that and it will help ease her mind. Keep a small variety of toys in the room and try to mis it up as much as possible like hiding treats. When she is comfortable with that room then you can leave the door open. If she feels scared she will go in her 'safe' room.
