As of today I rescued a 3 year old Maltese. I got him from LCR in MI who got him from a breeder in MO. LCR only had him a week. I found him on the internet. I limited myself to only wanting to rescue a dog and to 3 specific breeds. The description of him is accurate and I also called and email LCR about him. I spent 3 1/2 hours with him. He is one frightened little animal. His trust I understand will take time. To me he is precious and deserves a good dog life. In order for him to have that good "doggie" life we will have to work at it.
My biggest concern right now is he is not leashed trained at all. I understand why. He doesn't "pull" the leash at all like most dogs who are not used to the leash. He just sits down. I will need to help him get used to walking on a leash quickly because he will need to go outside to potty. Of course I could carry him, but that won't be good for him or me in the long run. Can you give me some practice techniques to get him on the correct path. PLS. Since he is a puppy mill rescue my LCR in MI just named him Captain, he doesn't know his name. I am going to keep it Captain because we like it. Any advice you can give would make 3 ladies (me and my 2 daughters happy)

Hello well For him to get use to his name try putting a small distance away from you, call his name, then put a treat in front of him.
Do this a repeated amount of times until he realises when you call that name he should come.
I am guessing the leash part will take time, but try the same technique as above get someone to hold the leash while it's on him then get someone else to sit somewhere else about 2-3 metres away and show 'Captain' the treat and say 'walk' or different words such as 'come on'.
He should eventually realise he is supposed to walk when he has the leash on.
This may take him up to a couple of days to weeks or just depends on how long he takes to adjust to these new things.
Hope this helps.Try to keep doing this 1-3 times a day or more depends on how much he catches on.
Good luck and please respond back on how he is going.
