I have had my hamster for about 3-4 weeks and she just died. The night before she was normal and when i woke up the next morning she was dead. She had a clean cage, and fresh food and water, she also got to run around in her ball and had loads of love and attention. But i just want to know what happened to her. It's not of old age because when i bought her she was quite young but she did have contact with a male hamster. Is this the reason???

She could have picked up a bacterial infection somehow or had something genetically wrong with her when you bought her. was she from a pet shop? You must realize that pet shops mass produce their animals, and transport, overcrowding and exposure to the public as well as generally substandard care all the way along contribute to extreme stress for all animals unlucky enough to end up in a pet shop. Many home breeders of small animals have horrible conditions as well causing stress. He may have been inbred, and just been of poor stock. Even though you did everything right for your hammie, the additional stress of a new home can weaken the immune system and then a bacteria or virus takes the opportunity to overcome the animal. Sometimes too much handling and attention early on are stressful for small mammals like hamsters and they just get weakened by all the changes. Were there ANY symptoms you observed like runny stools or lethargy? I am sorry you lost your pet...it is always heart-breaking whatever the case....

I am sorry for your loss...it sounds like you and your hamster were very close. Have you found out anything more about what caused this loss?
