My 3 year old rabbit has been living indoors for its entire life. I would like to move it to a hutch outside on a porch, however I live in NYC and the winters can get cold and the summers hot. Do I need to take any special steps to acclimate the rabbit to the outdoors? If it would be okay to do, are there any special hutches and accesories that I should be looking into?

Thanks for your time.

i used to worry about the winter too but i have learned over time that rabbits like the cold much much more than heat. but what i did, and it gets really cold here too. but what i did was i moved my into the hutch and the hutch into the garage first. that way they get used to the colder change easier. i kept them in there for 2 weeks and then moved the hutch outside. but if tempeture drops below 25 degrees i suggest taking him in but others say its fine, i just cant imagine living in 25 degree weather all day long even in a fur coat. anywho, i put a link thats all about cold weather and rabbits so you can read about it. now heat, thats the worst one to worry about. rabbits get very hot very quick. they can have heat strokes pretty easy. i kept rabbits in arizona durin the summer outside in a hutch. so it is possible, just make sure there is shade and that you get a large tote, like a storage tote but not a HUGE one, just like one that can hold 1 or 2 gallons of water. put water in it and freeze it over night, run the hose over it so the ice comes out and put the ice block in the hutch for them to lean against and lick if they are hot. il post a link for rabbits in hot weather in a second, this one is for cold weather. only 1 link per msg lol
