How Do I Prevent My Pinto Horse Being Sun Burnt?

Tools: Email Bookmark Comment

My pinto gelding is prone to sunburn on the pink skin under his white shoulders. He has a large turnout area and shelter as he pleases. What can I do to prevent this? (Arnold Black - Texas)

This is a common complaint in areas with sun as intense as Texas at this time of year. Without keeping him locked up all day long (not even a serious suggestion I know), there are not many options. Something often advised is the use of a sunscreen designed for children rubbed into all of his pink-skinned areas. Make sure you test this on a small area of skin first in case of any potential allergies.
